New York, National Board of Review, and Boston have all pounced on the awards and rewarded Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty both Best Picture and Best Director.  Next up, the Los Angeles Film Critics will unveil their choices tomorrow.  Many believe this is an opportunity for either Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master or Ben Affleck’s Argo to bounce back into the race in a big way.  The two seem to be hemorrhaging at the moment in the awards race.

Not going to delve too deep into what this group means in the awards season but if Zero Dark Thirty wins again tomorrow, we may need to start evaluating the true power this film has over voters and start entertaining the idea, Bigelow’s film trumps Lincoln, Les Miserables, and Argo.  This is an exciting race to say the least.

Some things that we can expect based on past choices:

  • Some choices that SCREAM Hollywood.  Big stars, big movies.
  • A Foreign Actress, likely in Lead to win the award.  Likely someone the mainstream public has never heard of.
  • At least one actor or craftsman that wins for their “body of work.”
  • They don’t go “young” too often.
  • Won’t take five hours like New York. Eh…
