According to Buzzfeed News, Lucy Liu (“Elementary”) directs the Season 2 premiere of “Marvel’s Luke Cage,” set for release on Netflix sometime next year. The news comes on the heels of a fan sighting in June, where Liu was seen on the show’s set, prompting speculations for Liu guest-starring on the series. Liu has previous directorial experience with “Elementary” and “Graceland,” where she met “Marvel’s Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. Coker released a statement praising Liu’s work, saying:
She brings the same buoyant intensity, deft humor, and singular focus to her directing that she has always brought to her acting…not to mention the fact that the former ‘O’Ren Ishii’ certainly knows her way around an action sequence. Her enthusiasm is infectious.
Executive producer Jeph Loeb (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) was also pleased with Liu’s directing work on the show, saying, “When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof director. Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story, and an obvious love of actors. She is rocking Luke Cage 2.”
The directing choice is prudent for the show, which had no female directors at the helm last season. Director Steph Green (“The Americans”) will also direct an episode for Season 2, another encouraging move. Liu herself addressed how difficult it is for women in the industry to get directing opportunities, telling the Associated Press, “It’s harder for women in general. You have to ask and ask and ask. You have to break the door down … and come in with a real belief in what you’re doing.”
“Luke Cage” returns with its second season sometime next year.
