Mahershala Ali in Discussions to Join ‘True Detective’ Season Three

As much as the first season of “True Detective” was met with critical acclaim, the second season was met with disappointment and indifference. Despite a solid lead cast in Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn, the show never found an audience the second time around. Part of that was just how amazing the combination of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in season one was. Part of it was also the story wasn’t as strong. Well, as HBO ponders a potential third season, they’ve entered into negotiations with a terrific choice for a possible new leading man in Mahershala Ali.

According to Variety, Ali is in discussions to come aboard for season three of
“True Detective,” should HBO order a new installment of the anthology. Previously, it was reported that “Deadwood” creator David Milch could be writing the season, under the supervision of show runner Nic Pizzolatto. So far, the creative pieces are coming together nicely. It’s now just a matter of the powers that be deciding to give it the green light. If a new season of “True Detective” does happen, Ali is an excellent pick for one of the central parts. Fresh off of winning Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for “Moonlight,” this could further cement him on the A list. Fingers crossed that the show ends up happening.
