Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh (“Six Shooter”) has his next project lined up and it will see him reunite with Searchlight Pictures, now operated by Disney. As reported by Variety, McDonagh’s next film will tell the story of two friends on a remote Irish isle, whose friendship takes an abrupt turn with drastic consequences.

McDonagh worked with Searchlight on “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” three years ago to great critical acclaim, with the film earning the Irish-British filmmaker nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Stars Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand both won Oscars for their performance in the dark comedy and there will be great anticipation to find out who may feature in this next project.

UK-based Film4 is on board with the project too, which will be written and directed by McDonagh, as is common with his handful of feature films so far. McDonagh was also nominated for an Oscar in 2009 for his “In Bruges” screenplay which starred Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.

The acclaimed playwright has often turned to the same group of actors for his feature films, with Farrell, Rockwell and Woody Harrelson have all worked together on “Seven Psychopaths” and the latter two together on “Three Billboards.” McDonagh won his first Academy Award in 2006 for his live-action short film “Six Shooter.”

Before filming can begin, McDonagh’s play “Hangmen” will open on Broadway in March, which received an abundance of praise back in 2015 when it played in London. McDonagh has had incredible stage success with his plays “The Pillowman” and “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” to name a couple, receiving a total of four Tony Award nominations throughout his career.

Searchlight Pictures meanwhile, who is now a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios, had further Oscar success recently. “Jojo Rabbit” won the Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay, whilst the year before saw Olivia Colman win Best Actress for “The Favourite.”

Expect more news on casting and further plot details in the coming weeks. Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin of Blueprint Pictures will produce alongside McDonagh, whilst Diarmuid McKeown, Ben Knight, Daniel Battsek and Ollie Madden will executively produce.
