Mary J. Blige is heading to an all-new original series for Netflix.

The company confirmed that Blige will star in a series regular role in the upcoming series, “The Umbrella Academy.”

The series is based on the Eisner award-winning graphic novels by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabrial Bá. The comic series is published by Dark Horse Comics.

“The Umbrella Academy” tells the story of a dysfunctional family of superheroes who are brought back together to solve their father’s mysterious death. But things aren’t always simple for the estranged family members.

Blige will play Cha-Cha. Her character is described as:

“…a ruthless and unorthodox hitwoman who travels through time to kill assigned targets. Even though she has a few gripes about the bureaucracy of her employers, this job is her life. She is sadistic, sociopathic, and her reputation precedes her. Her true love is torture, and she thinks of herself as a ‘pain artist.’ She really doesn’t care for people—except for her partner Hazel.”

Mary J. Blige has won nine Grammy Awards over her career in music. She has also appeared in a number of television series and films including “Rock of Ages” and “Black Nativity,” among others. But it was her role in last year’s film that made everyone take notice of her acting talent. Blige is nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Supporting Actress and for the original song, “Mighty River,” from “Mudbound.”

“The Umbrella Academy” is produced by Universal Cable Productions. Steve Blackman (“Fargo,” “Altered Carbon”) serves as Executive Producer and showrunner. Bluegrass Television, Mike Richardson, and Keith Goldberg of Dark Horse Entertainment also executive produce. Comic writer Gerard Way will co-executive produce.

The cast also includes Tom Hopper (“Game of Thrones”), David Castaneda (“Jane the Virgin”), Robert Sheehan (“Geostorm”), and Ellen Page (“Juno”).

The series is currently in production and a release date will be announced soon.
