Universal is taking full advantage of its classic monster properties to bring to life an original creature feature musical.
According to Deadline, Universal Pictures is bringing to life an all new musical film called “Monster Mash” based on an original treatment from Matt Stawski who is also set to direct the project. While plot details are being pretty heavily guarded, Black List screenwriter Will Widger will be handling scripting duties.
It will be interesting to see what Stawski has in mind for the project considering this will be his feature directorial debut. However, Stawski is no stranger to musically driven narratives as the Grammy nominated music video director is the genius behind the music video for CeeLo Green‘s smash hit “Fuck You.”
One can only assume Bobby “Boris” Pickett‘s hit Halloween song of the same name served as inspiration for the project. However, whether or not the chart topper will serve as the show stopping musical number remains to be seen. There’s also the question of whether the film, as the title suggests, will assemble all of their iconic creatures such as The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, and more. If so, Stawski’s ambitious project could be the musical Avengers for Universal’s monsters.
Ever since the massive failure of Universal’s failed Dark Universe, the studio has gone back to its roots of creative, low budget, director driven projects that utilize their iconic creatures in new ways. With Leigh Whannell’s highly anticipated new spin on “The Invisible Man” hitting theaters later this month followed by Paul Feig’s “Dark Army” and Elizabeth Banks’ “The Invisible Woman” in the coming years, the future of Universal’s creature features looks not only promising but interesting with “Monster Mash” adding to that.
