Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, “Molly’s Game,” will close out AFI Fest 2017. The American Film Institute (AFI) will honor the Academy Award-winning writer and director with a moderated discussion of Sorkin’s work, followed by a gala premiere screening. “Molly’s Game” replaces Ridley Scott’s film “All The Money In The World” after star Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”) was outed as a sexual predator in the recent sexual harassment controversy sweeping Hollywood.

Written and directed by Sorkin, “Molly’s Game” stars Jessica Chastain (“The Martian”) and Idris Elba (“The Dark Tower”) in the glitzy, dangerous world of high-stakes underground poker. The film tells the true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the biggest high-stakes poker game and later became an FBI agent. “Molly’s Game” also features Kevin Costner (“Hidden Figures”), Michael Cera (“Arrested Development”), Jeremy Strong (“Detroit”), Chris O’Dowd (“Get Shorty”) and Bill Camp (“The Night Of”). The film is produced by Mark Gordon, Matt Jackson and Amy Pascal, with Entertainment One (eOne) and The Mark Gordon Company financing and eOne distributing.

Jacqueline Lyanga, AFI Fest’s director, praised the writer and director, saying:

Aaron Sorkin is an American master, and we are proud to shine a proper spotlight on his directorial debut, MOLLY’S GAME, on AFI FEST’s Closing Night. As Sorkin embarks on this next chapter of his career, his talents are timely for a tribute as he brings his gift of crafting compelling narratives and complex characters to the story of female impresario Molly Bloom.

Sorkin is a writing giant in TV and film, earning four Primetime Emmys for “The West Wing,” which he wrote and created, and an Oscar for “The Social Network.” He’s also written such critical hits “A Few Good Men,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Moneyball” and the TV series “The Newsroom.”

AFI Fest 2017’s closing screening and gala take place Nov. 16 at the TCL Chinese Theatre. “Molly’s Game” premieres in theaters Jan. 5, 2018. Watch the trailer below.
