Oh boy, the awards season is starting earlier than ever, at least in terms of the beginning of an Oscar campaign. Usually, we’re in the fall before screeners begin going out to voters. Sometimes, it works, but more often than not it doesn’t really matter too much. Could this year be different? Well, Focus Features and Roadside Attractions certainly hope so, as they’re sending out copies of The Place Beyond the Pines and Mud, respectively.
Both films obviously have uphill battles for any nominations, and as Scott Feinberg notes here for The Hollywood Reporter, they’re not even sending out Oscar screeners yet, just Blu-Rays and DVDs to members of the Hollywood Foreign Press and certain other places. Still, these are two deserving indies that definitely need a leg up, and it appears that they’re going to be receiving them.
I’m not ready to predict nominations for either film, and I know Clayton feels similarly, but I could see The Place Beyond the Pines doing their best to make a dent in the Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Bradley Cooper or Ryan Gosling), and Best Original Screenplay (mainly as a way to recognize co-writer/director Derek Cianfrance‘s work) race, while Mud will be doing the same with Supporting Actor (Matthew McConaughey) and Original Screenplay (honoring filmmaker Jeff Nichols). Time will tell if it matters or not, but let the campaigning begin. I for one am eager to see where this goes…
