Netflix Acquires Soderbergh Film ‘High Flying Bird’ Starring Holland and Beetz

Netflix has continued to showcase its ability to bring auteur work to a mass audience. The streaming giant continues to dominate much of the early awards talk in 2018. Just look at the Venice Film Festival, where “ROMA” took home the Golden Lion for Alfonso Cuarón. With more auteurs and creatives finding their way to Netflix, it is not surprising to hear that Steven Soderbergh will join up. His next film, “High Flying Bird” has been acquired by Netflix. The film also stars André Holland and “Atlanta” star Zazie Beetz.

According to Deadline, a deal has been struck by Soderbergh and Netflix to bring his next feature to the streaming platform. Tarell Alvin McCraney, an Oscar-winning writer for “Moonlight,” pens “High Flying Bird.” The story will follow a sports agent during a basketball lockout. A new rookie has signed with the agent, who pitches a controversial proposition as the lost season looms.

Perhaps the most exciting development is the casting of Holland. Holland broke out while on Soderbergh’s “The Knick,” and delivered career-best work. Holland will lead the ensemble as the sports agent. Zazie Beetz plays Holland’s right-hand man. Melvin Gregg from “UnREAL” plays the basketball star. Kyle MacLachlanZachary QuintoSonja Sohn, and Bill Duke round out the cast.

This is not Soderbergh’s first collaboration with Netflix. He also produced “Godless,” which received 10 Emmy nominations at this year’s Emmys. It has already taken home one prize from the Creative Arts Emmys, held last weekend, for Main Title Theme Music going to Carlos Rafael Rivera. Soderbergh’s often pushing the technological advances of filmmaking. It’ll be exciting to see how a script from a “Moonlight” writer blends with the director of “Traffic” and other dark films. We could hear about Soderbergh as a potential Oscar player again in 2019.
