Netflix Officially Renews ‘Stranger Things’ for Third Season

EN

Are you ready for another trip to Hawkins, Indiana?

Netflix took to Twitter this morning to announce that “Stranger Things” Season 3 is officially happening.

The hit series stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, and a host of child actors who became stars overnight when Season 1 hit the streaming service.

“Stranger Things” follows the tale of four boys, Will (Noah Schnapp), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo). Season 1 took place in 1983, when Will was kidnapped by evil forces and taken into an alternate and terrifying dimension known as the Upside Down. His friends teamed up with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) to try to find him and bring him home. Season 2 continued the tale one year later, showing the psychological and emotional impact of the first season.

While no information is yet available for Season 3, it is expected to take place in 1985. Given that the show has been called a cross between Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, 1985 is ripe with pop culture inspiration.

“Stranger Things” was created by The Duffer Brothers. Several weeks ago, they said they have a four-season arc planned for the series. In addition to creating the series, the brothers also serve as executive producers and directors.

While Netflix does not release viewing information, the series has proven to be a huge hit, expanding into many areas of pop culture. The cast appeared in the opening number at last year’s Golden Globe Awards. A video game is coming soon. An after-show called “Beyond Stranger Things” launched with Season 2. And there have even been references on the floor of Congress to living in the “Upside Down.”

Both seasons of “Stranger Things” have a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It was nominated for 18 Primetime Emmys, winning 5, and 2 Golden Globes. The show won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at last year’s SAG Awards. Ryder’s reaction sparked a number of viral memes.
