Earlier this week we got our first look of our new Queen in “The Crown” on Netflix. The show will change over its cast every two years, and we’re starting to getting our first looks at the new group. Olivia Colman looks perfect as Elizabeth and should be a serious contender for the Emmys immediately. However, another strong contender will be Helena Bonham Carter. Carter will take over the role of Princess Margaret, which netted Vanessa Kirby her first nomination this year. Ben Daniels also joins the cast as Anthony Armstrong-Jones. The two would go on to be one of the most sensational stories for the British tabloids in the 1960’s.
Today, we get a look at Carter as Margaret. Margaret was plagued by scandal during her time in the spotlight. She is largely responsible for the tabloid following that has persisted around the royal family for years after she considered marrying her former handler. That story was covered in the first season of “The Crown,” and in season 2 she married Anthony Armstrong-Jones.
The third season of “The Crown” formally enters the 1960s and with that comes change. The Beatles and their rise will be featured this season, as will England’s last World Cup victory. Amid these iconic moments of pop culture are changing attitudes about women, sex, and drug use. At the same time, the Royals continue to find themselves at the center of change, despite their unwillingness to engage. Adding Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Daniels to the cast will help bring those moments out. Get ready for these two to take center stage in the prestige drama.
