Netflix’s ‘Gypsy’ Cancelled After One Season

The Netflix bloodbath continues, and its latest victim is “Gypsy,” according to Deadline. The psychological thriller, written by Lisa Rubin, starred Naomi Watts (“Birdman”) as Manhattan therapist Jean Holloway (Watts), who begins to strike up close, taboo relationships with everyone in her patients’ lives.

“Gypsy” was produced by Watts and Rubin, among others. It also featured Billy Crudup (“Watchmen”), Sophie Cookson (“The Huntsman: Winter’s Bone”), Lucy Boynton (“Sing Street”), and Karl Glusman (“Love”). The series was Watts’ first lead role on a television show.

The move is a shock to many, as Netflix had previously been in talks about a second season. According to Deadline, the “Gypsy” writer’s room had even been working on Season 2 scripts for the past month. Netflix has declined to comment on the cancellation news, which comes just six weeks after “Gypsy’s” premiere, according to Vanity Fair.

“Gypsy” is yet another Netflix show to be cancelled in recent months. “The Get Down,” “Girlboss,” and “Sense8” were previously axed without warning. In order to appease “Sense8” fans, who started a worldwide petition for the show’s return, “Sense8” is getting a two hour wrap-up special, but the odds are against “Gypsy” getting the same treatment.

The increase in cancellations is a calculated move by Netflix founder and C.E.O. Reed Hastings, who told CNBC anchor Julia Boorstin, “I’m always pushing the content team: ‘We have to take more risk, you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.’” According to Hastings, Netflix’s “hit ratio” was too high; some projects needed to be axed in order for Netflix to pursue new projects.

In lighter news, the streaming platform has renewed action comedy “GLOW,” “Marvel’s Iron Fist,” and teen tearjerker “13 Reasons Why” for second seasons.
