New Blu-Ray/DVD Releases (09/18/18) – Dinosaurs Running Amok

This week, dinosaurs are back. Yes, the highlight coming to Blu-Ray and DVD this week is a “Jurassic World” sequel. To be fair, there isn’t much to choose from today. Still, we press on. Here goes nothing!

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

This franchise has become a bit of a punching bag lately. Sure, “Jurassic World” and its sequel are dumb, but they’re dumb fun. Plus, “Jurassic Park” set a standard that’s impossible to match. Here, we have Chris Pratt and super smart velociraptors as the new mainstay. A downgrade? Sure. However, it’s still rather enjoyable. You turn your brain off and it’s a solid spectacle. This time around, there’s also a new genetically engineered dinosaur. Over at Buzzfeed News, they had this to contribute:

Fallen Kingdom is the silliest and most purely enjoyable variation on a story that a few big studio productions have been offering recently.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” is just dinosaurs run amok in essentially a haunted mansion. If that sounds up your alley, you’ll enjoy it. Plus, this one sets up a sequel that could really be off the wall!

Special Features: Featurettes
Total Box Office: $416,292,240 (and counting)
Major Awards: None yet

In honor of this week’s release of “Fahrenheit 11/9,” the pick today will be the previous outing from Michael Moore which gave this film its namesake. Yes, it’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” the highest grossing documentary of all time. In it, Moore sought to prevent the re-election of George W. Bush as President. It was angry, funny, and very much of the moment. His follow up is as well, just in regard to Donald Trump and the current power structure in America. The New York Times had this to say:

It is worth seeing, debating and thinking about, regardless of your political allegiances.

Moore may be preaching to the converted, but his latest is one of his best yet. Be sure to give it a look!

Here’s a look at what else is hitting shelves today, besides the sole recommended title in the dinosaurs creating chaos that is “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”:

Billionaire Boys Club

An all time box office failure, this drama was barely given a release. Still, it managed to fall on its face, rather epically too. When the box office haul is an amount that I can cover, that’s bad (I’m desperately poor). Ansel Elgort is the star of this “Wall Street” ripoff, but it was notable for being perhaps the last Kevin Spacey movie to come out. The Hollywood Reporter took it to task like so:

It’s a derivative bore, all popped collars, douchey bros and hand-me-down psychology, that gets its characters up to their necks in borrowed money just long enough to have it really hurt when the accounts run dry.

The shunning of Spacey is complete. Stick with the dinosaurs.

Box Office: $618

This oddball Western is yet another example of Robert Pattinson trying out a lot of different things in a post “Twilight” world. Reviews for this one were pretty positive, with some nice attention paid to him. Furthermore, it’s yet another step in an interesting direction for the young actor. From our review right here on the site:

…this film, set in the Oregon of the 1870s, is more of a comedy/western/drama with a healthy dose of farce thrown in for good measure.

Make of that what you will.

Box Office: $305,136

Keanu Reeves starring in a throwaway B movie. Could be fun, right? Well, this got the sort of reception that Bruce Willis half efforts get, as opposed to ones from Nicolas Cage, for example. Well, on to the next one for Reeves, I suppose? Variety shrugged it off with the following take:

It can never decide what kind of film it wants to be, drifting into drab formlessness when it needs to find moments of poetry, and reverting to dull clichés when it wants to indulge its thriller instincts…
