New Full Trailer for “The Master”

Is Anderson’s latest a sure-fire contender?

master movie trailer 07192012 184600Up until today, the biggest news in relation to ‘The Master’ was the recent news that Paul Thomas Anderson’s flick had received an R rating from the MPAA. Now, we can also add a brand new trailer to the mix. It shows a lot of new footage, features some absolutely gorgeous cinematography, gets even further into the similarities that the religion/cult in question shares with Scientology, and overall does nothing to take away from the notion that this PTA flick is going to be a big Oscar contender. You can see the trailer after the jump and decide on its awards prospects in that ay, but I certainly like what I see here, in case you were wondering. Don’t take my word for it though, since you can see for yourself. Check it out below…

When he’s not obsessing over new Oscar predictions on a weekly basis, Joey is seeing between 300 and 350 movies a year. He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

Great trailer. But, is Phoenix really going to be a “supporting” actor, or just shoehorned into the category? If he is ran as lead, are we all going to just drop him from our predictions like we did Julianne Moore in 2010?

No, here is my prediction, he will go lead. Him and Hoffman will share lead. Similar scenarios like this happen often, All about Eve for example. Now if he can win with that situation is another story. He would be a for sure win supporting, however by going lead he could split with Hoffman very easily. He would be an admirable competition for Day-Lewis as well. This film looks like a BP contender. I got Platoon vibes from all over this. Also would not be surprised by a Paul Thomas Anderson serious Oscar talk. After Nolan he is one of… Read more »

Am I going to have to go back and eat crow from my original Awards Profile of this film? I hope so…

This is intriguing…I’m curious to see how it relates to Scientology or if it’s just a generalized cult sort of thing.

Another one I hope, I hope, I hope is at TIFF — will know next week in the first series of announcements — cannot wait for the festival this year.

I’m thinking my own personal awards for Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Actor, and Original Score are accounted for.

Lead or Supporting, I think Phoenix is going to win either way. He looks absolutely incredible.
The question for me isn’t will The Master be a BP nominee, the question is will/can it win?
