Luca Guadagnino has quickly risen as one of the arthouse favorite directors for modern cinephiles. Guadagnino has worked steadily since 1999, specifically with actress Tilda Swinton. His work, including “I Am Love,” “A Bigger Splash” and last year’s favorite “Call Me By Your Name” has made him a mainstay for indie filmmakers. This made the news that Guadagnino would be taking on “Suspiria” extremely interesting. The new trailer released today helps fill in the gaps of the story.

“Suspiria” follows Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson), a young dancer that has joined one of the premiere troupes in the world. Her teacher is Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton) and her friendship with Patricia (Chloë Grace Moretz) is exciting. However, darkness begins to surround the troupe and bad things await at every turn. As Susie becomes acquainted with the new city and troupe, she begins to realize something is off.

The original “Suspiria” (1977) remains a horror classic to this day. It’s use of non-traditional score (produced by the Italian punk band Goblin) changed horror films. The use of color and flashiness was unprecedented. Its influence was instantaneous. Guadagnino’s film looks very different from the original, which seems to justify its existence. Not only did Guadagnino dampen the color pallet considerably, but this feels like a far creepier, and somehow more unsettling take of the source material.

With psychology factoring in, and creepy things going bump in the night, this looks like nightmare fodder. This is all good news, and hopefully, Guadagnino can stick the landing. Swinton looks like she’s in peak form. That’s not even counting the rumors about her possible double-role. Meanwhile, the film could change the perception of Ms. Johnson. At the end of the day, this could be one of the years best.

“Suspiria” will open November 2nd, 2018. Amazon Studios will distribute.
