“X-Men” star Nicholas Hoult is looking to join “The Current War” as famous engineer Nikola Tesla. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hoult is currently in talks for the role.
Michael Shannon will star as George Westinghouse in the film, Deadline reported last week. The film is a “fact-based story” about Westinghouse and Thomas Edison as they compete to create and market an electricity system in the United States. Benedict Cumberbatch is also starring in the film as Edison.
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”) will direct the film, which The Weinstein Company is distributing.
Michael Mitnick wrote the script. Deadline had this to say about the film’s plot, so far:
[The film] takes place in the late 1880s and revolves around the two titans and their battle over the supply of electricity. Edison championed the use of a direct current for electric power distribution over an alternating current, which was backed by Westinghouse Electric and a host of European companies.
Shannon and Cumberbatch are both hot commodities of late. For his part, Shannon impressed at the Toronto International Film Festival and Venice Film Festival with “Nocturnal Animals” (Tom Ford). Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal also star in the film, which overall received critical praise. He also co-stars in Jeff Nichols’ “Loving,” which is getting early Oscar buzz. Shannon has one Oscar nomination under his belt for “Revolutionary Road.”
Cumberbatch, who is also an Oscar-nominated actor for his devastating turn as Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game,” is busy as well. He has Marvel’s upcoming “Dr. Strange,” and will reprise the role in “Avengers: Infinity War.”
He is also lending his voice to “The Jungle Book” as Shere Khan, and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” as the Grinch. Fans of the BBC’s “Sherlock” know Cumberbatch as the titular detective.
Although an official release date for “The Current War” is not available, the film is aiming for a December start. Stay tuned for all of the latest news on the film.
