Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming limited series “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker” starring Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer, launching March 20.
The series tells the inspirational story of Sarah Breedlove a.k.a. Madam C.J. Walker (Spencer) who built herself a fortune and an empire in revolutionizing black hair care, becoming America’s first female, self-made millionaire despite the many barriers in her way.
The official synopsis for the series from Netflix reads:
“Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer stars as Madam C.J. Walker, the trailblazing African American haircare entrepreneur who was America’s first female self-made millionaire. Inspired by the book, ‘On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker,’ written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles, the Netflix four-part limited series brings the uplifting story of this cultural icon to the screen for the first time. Against all odds, Walker overcame post-slavery racial and gender biases, personal betrayals, and business rivalries to build a ground-breaking brand that revolutionized black haircare, as she simultaneously fought for social change.”
Spencer is joined by Tiffany Haddish, Carmen Ejogo and Garrett Morris, along with Blair Underwood as her husband for the four-part series in which she also co-executive produces. LeBron James, Janine Sherman Barrois, Elle Johnson, Maverick Carter, Mark Holder, Christine Holder, Jamal Henderson, and Kasi Lemmons also serve as executive producers, with the latter having directed three episodes of the series.
DeMane Davis directed an episode too, having recently worked on the television series “How to Get Away with Murder.” Lemmons directed last year’s Harriet Tubman biopic “Harriet,” for which Cynthia Erivo received her first two Academy Award nominations in the Best Actress and Best Original Song categories.
Spencer has had much success as both an actor and a producer in recent years, winning an Academy Award for “The Help” as well as nominations for “Hidden Figures” and “The Shape of Water.” She also worked as an executive producer on Best Picture winner “Green Book,” as well as last year’s horror flick “Ma” which she also starred in.
This is shaping up to be another busy year for the versatile and talented Spencer, who lends her voice to the Disney Pixar animation “Onward” which is out on March 6, as well as recently wrapping up filming on “The Witches” from Robert Zemeckis, based on the beloved Roald Dahl novel.
