OSCAR: 20 Films Shortlisted for Visual Effects, Including ‘Black Panther, ‘Infinity War,’ & ‘Paddington 2’

We’ve received our first Oscar shortlist for the season, narrowing the field for Visual Effects to twenty nominees. While the Oscars are set to drop a handful of shortlists on the same day later this month, the visual effects branch traditionally cut their field twice. Even with the changed date, they continue this trend by announcing their first batch of nominees below.

Before looking at the actual nominees, there are a few films dropped from the race already. The big two are “Deadpool 2” and “Venom,” each of which brought in significant money. However, there are a lot of superhero films on the list already. Two animated films made the cut, with both “Incredibles 2” and “Isle of Dogs” jumping into the race. Just a couple years ago, “Kubo and the Two Strings” made the Oscar five, so watch out. Finally, eight of the twenty films on the shortlist are Disney owned or distributed films. That means the House of Mouse represents forty percent of the potential nominees on Oscar morning. It was a good day for Disney.

The full list can be found below.
