Oscar Circuit: Supporting Actor

And the Nominees are…

  • Barkhad Abdi – Captain Phillips
  • Bradley Cooper – American Hustle
  • Michael Fassbender – Twelve Years a Slave
  • Jonah Hill – The Wolf of Wall Street
  • Jared Leto – Dallas Buyers Club

The Supporting Actor Oscar race is one that has produced a number of surprises over the years. Since the Screen Actors Guild came into play in 1994, only 11 out of the 19 SAG Supporting Actor winners have gone on to win the Oscar in the same category. Needless to say, 58% accuracy does not make for a very good bellwether.

This year, however, is one of those years without any mystery. Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) is so far out in front in this race that the engravers might as well start chiseling his name in now. I never like to call any race a foregone conclusion, but this is one of those times that seem acceptable to do so. For argument’s sake, let’s take a look at the rest of the field so that we can say we did our due diligence in case something goes awry.

Here is a little bit more information about your nominees:

Lover of all things film and Oscar. Fantasy sports’ equivalent of George Steinbrenner. Your very own Han Solo, making friends all over the movie-loving galaxy in spite of himself. When he’s not ranking just about everything or dominating boardgames, Mark is breaking down the Oscar race 24/7 with Rain Man-like stats and knowledge. In his downtime, you can find him commiserating with other Northeast Ohio sports fans because a hero isn’t complete without a little heartbreak. If Game of Thrones, Lost, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Survivor are your style, then congratulations, you have something in common with this inglourious basterd.

Tough to disagree with this prediction. This category has been so…not a race recently (save Waltz last year). All great winners, though. Leto will make a very worthy addition to the Best Supporting Actor Oscar pantheon.

While obviously Leto is in a comfortable position to win, I think next in line is certainly Abdi, not Fassbender. Abdi has more awards, including the BAFTA, which should have been an easy get for Fassy.

It’s simply remarkable just how little Fassbender cares about winning an Oscar! He would be my pick, but since he isn’t campaigning at all, I’ll be happy if either Abdi or Leto takes it.

cant wait to see Leto go down as one of the worst winners ever

Leto is def the favorite – as he should be. Excellent performance. Interesting that all the others play sleazeballs – even Abdi is a villain. And believe it or not I find the scariest one to be Jonah Hill. The combination of his image, being so value-less and those teeth just gives me chills. Maybe that’s to his credit.
