The Academy revealed through their twitter account today that Billie Eilish will perform at this year’s Oscars ceremony.
The news comes just a few days after the 18-year-old swept the Grammy Awards, becoming the first artist to win the ‘big four’ categories at the ceremony since 1981. It has not yet been revealed what song she will be singing.
Eilish was also in the news recently as it was revealed she would be performing the new song for the next installment in the James Bond franchise, “No Time to Die.” There is a possibility that this could be the song she performs live, with the Academy Awards seemingly a great platform to debut the song.
Bond songs are often favorites of the Academy, with the last two outings for the franchise picking up the prize for Best Original Song. Sam Smith’s win for “Spectre” was somewhat of a surprise to some after he beat Lady Gaga, whilst Adele’s win for “Skyfall” was a much bigger certainty on the night. With a handful of Grammys now to her name, could an Oscar be next for Eilish?
As of yet, there is no news on who else is performing, including those nominated in the Best Original Song category. It is often tradition for those nominated to perform live, with attempts from the Academy to put a stop to this last year put to a halt thanks to extreme criticism.
That means performances of “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from “Rocketman,” “Stand Up” from “Harriet” and “Into the Unknown” from “Frozen II” are very likely to feature in this year’s ceremony. The other nominees in that category are Diane Warren’s “I’m Standing With You” from “Breakthrough” and Randy Newman’s “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from “Toy Story 4.”
