Oscars: ‘Parasite’ Makes History with Best Picture Win

The 92nd Academy Awards were presented last night from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Whilst the full list of winners can be found here on Awards Circuit, the biggest news of the night was that South Korean film “Parasite” was awarded Best Picture.

In an unprecedented move from the Academy, in a year they once again came under scrutiny for a lack of diversity, “Parasite” became the first Foreign Language film to win the top prize at the Awards.

It had already made history before a single prize was given out, staking its claim as the first-ever South Korean film to be nominated at the Oscars. It looked as though “Burning” may have been last year, however, the Steven Yeun thriller was snubbed in the Foreign Language Film category, paving the way for “Parasite” to achieve that landmark instead.

After its incredibly successful precursor run, it seemed certain that “Parasite” would be picking up at least two wins on the night – Best International Film and Best Original Screenplay – however, the strength of “1917” with BAFTA, DGA and PGA meant that winning any more than that was going to be a challenge.

However, when Bong Joon-ho’s name was read out as Best Director winner, beating out heavy favorite Sam Mendes, it became apparent that history was about to be made. Jane Fonda presented the final award for Best Picture, with her announcement of “Parasite” met with rapturous applause.

The win for “Parasite” opens up the door for International films in the future in the Best Picture category. Plenty has been nominated in the past, with “Roma” last year coming incredibly close, however, the Academy has finally embraced international brilliance by handing their top prize to a film from South Korea.

In the Original Screenplay category, the win for “Parasite” marks the first foreign film to win that category since Pedro Almodovar’s “Talk to Her” all the way back in 2002.

Other winners throughout the night were as expected, with Brad Pitt, Renee Zellweger, Joaquin Phoenix and Laura Dern collecting the four acting prizes. Taika Waititi won his first Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and the technical categories were evenly spread.

Once again, the full list of winners can be found here on Awards Circuit.
