Rami Malek as rock icon Freddie Mercury in the upcoming Twentieth Century Fox/New Regency film BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY.

I’m Selina, Awards Circuit’s queer Girl Friday for everything LGBTQIA+ on film and TV! Y’all, so much is happening and I don’t know where to begin. We have a coming out on “How To Get Away With Murder,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s” Season 1, Miss Coco Peru on “Will & Grace,” another Boy Erased trailer, Bohemian Rhapsody breaking the box office, and more. So. Much. More. Here’s the lowdown on everything that happened this week: trust me, it’s a lot to process.

“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” Is A Queer Delight

You can read my full review of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” here, but I have to give kudos to Lachlan Watson and Chance Perdomo. Watson, a 17-year-old actor who identifies as non-binary, plays Sabrina’s friend Susie, a trans character still figuring out who they are and how they identify. Their storyline reflects the struggles that so many LGBTQIA+ youth go through in their daily life, while acknowledging Susie’s identity in several magical ways during Season 1. Ambrose, Sabrina’s cousin (played by Perdomo) is also a highlight of the series, showing an openly pansexual man who has fully embraced his sexuality, without keeping the character in the “gay best friend” box. This is what good representation looks like. Refreshing, isn’t it?

Valentina To Play Angel on NBC’s Live “Rent” Production

She’s baaa-aaack: Valentina (hopefully sans mask) has been cast as Angel Dumont Schunard in NBC’s live version of “Rent,” joining the likes of Vanessa Hudgens and Jordan Fisher. Here’s the full cast list, per Deadline:

  • Kiersey Clemons (“The Flash”) as Joanne Jefferson, lawyer and girlfriend to Maureen
  • Brandon Victor Dixon (“Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert”) as Tom Collins, computer scientist, and boyfriend to Angel
  • Fisher as Mark Cohen, an aspiring filmmaker, and Maureen’s ex-boyfriend
  • Hudgens (“Spring Breakers,” “High School Musical”) as performance artist Maureen Johnson, girlfriend to Joanne
  • Brennin Hunt (“Walking With Herb”) as Roger Davis, washed-up rock star and boyfriend to Mimi

“Rent” airs as a live three-hour musical event on Jan. 27. What do you think of the cast lineup?

New Pic Of Melissa Benoist, Ruby Rose On Set For DC Crossover Event “Elseworlds”

As the “Elseworlds” crossover event draws near, cast and crew have been showing their excitement for newcomer Ruby Rose, who’s set to play lesbian crimefighter Batwoman. Melissa Benoist (aka, Supergirl) shared a pic of the pair smiling together on set, while “Arrow” stunt coordinator James Bamford shared a now-deleted photo of Rose in costume. Can December get here sooner, please?

History Repeats on “Grey’s Anatomy”

After weeks of dancing around each other, newcomer Nico (Alex Landi) and Levi (Jake Borelli) finally kissed…but things did not go as planned. While Levi confirmed his gayness with that kiss, Nico was put off when he realized Levi had never kissed another man and decided he didn’t want to deal with the whole gayby phase of Levi’s life. Nico’s reaction reminded me a lot of Arizona’s initial rejection of Callie a million seasons ago. So does this mean Levi and Nico will eventually get married? To make the reveal even sweeter, Borelli also came out as gay in real life, highlighting the impact stories like Nico and Levi’s have on LGBTQIA+ youth (see below).

Oliver Comes Out As HIV-Positive On “How To Get Away With Murder”

The Connor/Oliver wedding is drawing closer and closer, with their moms coming into town for the nuptials. Oliver (Conrad Ricamora), Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver’s mom (can’t find her name, sorry!) have some awkward run-ins during the episode, with Oliver’s mom showing concerns over their relationship. Since he’d started dating Oliver, she explained, he’d grown distant and seemed to shut her out. But Oliver, in a moving coming-out scene,  finally decided to tell her about his HIV-positive status, which he’d been keeping from his mother since Season 1. Oliver’s mom has one of the best reactions to the news I’ve seen in recent TV history, accepting Oliver and promising to love him until the day she dies, no matter what. Oh, and when Oliver reveals Connor’s actually been his rock through all this, and not the problem? Connor gets the Mom Stamp of Approval, too. Now, here’s hoping Oliver’s not that dead body at the wedding…

Miss Coco Peru’s Fabulous Cameo on “Will & Grace”

Thursday’s “Will & Grace”  was a more serious episode for the beloved comedy, as Grace (Debra Messing) revealed her past sexual assault in a moving episode about the #MeToo movement. To lighten the mood, drag queen Miss Coco Peru revisited the show, mediating a lip-sync “Bitch Royale” between Karen and Will. This was the third time the legendary Miss Coco (of “To Wong Foo” fame, y’know) visited “Will & Grace,” and you better believe it was incredible.

“BoJack Horseman” Renewed For Season 6

Good news for “BoJack Horseman” fans: Netflix has greenlit Season 6, just a month and a half after Season 5 hit the streaming platform. This also means that Todd (Aaron Paul), one of only two asexual characters on TV right now, will also be getting another season. Yay Todd!

One Last Trailer Before “Boy Erased” Hits Theaters

Focus Features released one final trailer before Boy Erased hits theaters, just in case you weren’t sold on this year’s queer festival darling. “Boy Erased,” written and directed by Joel Edgerton and adapted from Garrard Conley’s memoir, follows Jared Eamons (Lucas Hedges), the gay son of a Baptist preacher who is pressured into attending conversion therapy. Jared and his parents (Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman) struggle between their religious beliefs and loving their son while Jared sets out on a journey towards love and self-acceptance, despite what religious homophobes try to do to him. The trailer also advertises StopErasing, a website linked to the film that provides links to foundations who help LGBTQIA+ youth and are trying to end conversion therapy.

“Boy Erased” hits select theaters Friday, Nov. 2, and is everywhere Nov. 16. Watch the trailer below.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” Hitting Theaters After Cleaning Up With Pre-Sales

The Queen biopic is finally here, and it’s already blowing its box office competition out of the water. Bohemian Rhapsody,” which premieres this weekend, has become Fandango’s highest advance-ticket seller of the year at $35 million, blowing past fellow Oscar contender “A Star is Born” ($30 million) and “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” ($34.9 million). Per Deadline, theaters have been asking Fox for extra screens, with “Bohemian Rhapsody” now set to play at over 4,000 theaters this weekend.

Starring Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”) as Freddie Mercury, the film follows Mercury and the rest of Queen in their rise to fame and the lead up to Queen’s Live Aid performance at Wembley in 1985. Judging by sneak peeks and Malek’s spot-on Freddie transformation, this will be one of those films that picks up gold on the awards circuit and at the box office.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” premieres Friday, Nov. 2. Watch the trailer below.
