The film will be directed by both Will Speck and Josh Gordon (“Blades of Glory”) with production set to begin next month. Spenser Cohen has penned the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, with Co-President of Production Jeb Brody to oversee the film.
Deadline described the plot this way:
“Distant” tells the story of an asteroid miner (Ramos), who after crashing on an alien planet faces the obstacles and difficult challenges of his new surroundings. He must make his way across the dangerous and unknown terrain in order to find the only other survivor -a woman (Brosnahan) who is trapped inside of her escape pod.
Academy Award nominee Fred Berger (“La La Land”), Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (“Midnight Special”) and Anna Halberg (“Extinction”) are set to produce, while directors Speck and Gordon will serve as executive producers alongside Jonathan Rothbart and Matt Hirsch.
Brosnahan received her first major awards recognition in 2015, when she was nominated for Guest Actress at the Emmy Awards for her performance in “House of Cards.” She has since shot to fame for her role as Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” for which Brosnahan has won two Golden Globes, two SAG Awards and an Emmy. The third season of the show recently aired on Amazon Prime, with a fourth on the way.
Ramos, meanwhile, is best known for his work on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” and is set to star in the 2021 recording of the beloved Broadway musical. It was recently announced that Walt Disney Studios has acquired the distribution rights for “Hamilton” and it will hit U.S. theaters Oct. 15, 2021. Ramos is set for a busy 2020 with feature roles in Jon M. Chu’s “In the Heights” as well as “Honest Thief” starring alongside Liam Neeson.
With production on “Distant” set to begin next month, more news will be expected in the coming weeks regarding casting and first looks. No release date has been announced.
