Rami Malek in Talks to Play Bond 25 Villain

Merely days after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor, could Rami Malek be joining one of cinema’s most storied franchises? The “Bohemian Rhapsody” actor and newly minted Oscar winner is apparently in talks to do just that. Moreover, he wouldn’t just be signing on to any old sequel with any old part. No, he’d be getting quite the juicy role to play.

Variety reports that Malek is the top choice to play the villain in the 25th James Bond film. He’s long been producers’ pick, but there was worry about scheduling. That seems to have been worked out, so he’s in discussions to sign on.

Here is some further reporting on who else could be joining “Bond 25” (or whatever it ends up being called):

Sources indicate that Billy Magnussen is the top choice to play the CIA operative that crosses paths with Bond, though it’s not known if an actual offer is on the table. Magnussen already has a working relationship with “Bond 25” writer-director Cary Joji Fukunaga after recently appearing on his Netflix series, “Maniac.” Insiders say, before coming on to “Bond 25,” Fukunaga had already tried to cast him in his Leonard Bernstein pic, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, that was shelved, and that Fukunaga’s most recent draft had the character written younger to fit Magnussen’s age.

As for the villain, sources indicate there is renewed interest in tapping recent Oscar winner Rami Malek, after it was initially thought that scheduling could not be worked out with his commitments on the final season of “Mr. Robot.” Insiders say while meetings with other talent have taken place, producers never wavered on trying to land the role for Malek and have worked hard for months to accommodate both shoots.

Malek opposite Daniel Craig? Depending on what type of villain they’re going for, that could be vert interesting. Filmmaker Cary Joji Fukunaga could have quite the cast on board, if Malek and the likes of Billy Magnussen sign on. More on these casting decisions when we have them.
