The 40th Golden Raspberry Award winners were announced, with Tom Hooper’s critically panned “Cats” taking home the prizes for Worst Picture and Worst Director. Originally intended to take place in Los Angeles, the current global pandemic of the COVID-19 virus led to its cancellation, with the Razzie winners instead announced via a hilarious YouTube video embedded below.
“Cats” took home a total of six awards on the night, with stars Rebel Wilson and James Corden named Worst Supporting Actress and Actor respectively. It marked the biggest win total (if it can be considered that) since “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” received seven awards in 2013.
Hooper’s prize for Worst Director bookends quite the decade for the filmmaker who won the Oscar for Best Director in 2010 for “The King’s Speech,” as well as the film itself winning Best Picture.
However it wasn’t just about the feline musical, with other films also recognized as the worst of the year. John Travolta was named Worst Actor for his performances in both “The Fanatic” and “Trading Paint” while Hilary Duff was declared Worst Actress for “The Haunting of Sharon Tate.” Sylvester Stallone’s “Rambo: Last Blood” was the only other film besides “Cats” to receive multiple awards, earning two prizes for Worst Sequel and Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property.
The night’s only real ‘winner’ was Eddie Murphy, who won the Razzie Redeemer Award for “Dolemite is My Name.” The award recognizes an actor or a filmmaker who featured in a well-received film of the year despite a questionable filmography in recent times. Murphy came out on top in a stacked category featuring Jennifer Lopez, Adam Sandler, Will Smith and Keanu Reeves.
To accompany the winners announcement on the Razzie’s YouTube Channel was the following quote, in relation to recent global events and the decision to announce winners this way instead:
“This past weekend the Razzies had planned a really humongous show – complete with an opening parody number, sketches, “Celebrity Presenters” and The Whole Balla Wax – eventually to be beamed out to the entire world. But due to unforeseen circumstances – otherwise known as the Corona-Virus – we are instead bringing the public a bit more intimate video, suitable for viewing by any audience currently in lock-down mode.”
