Rian Johnson will write and direct the next ‘Star Wars’ film

Rian_Top_10_originalWow! Now this is news to be excited about folks. Apparently Episodes VIII and IX of the Star Wars saga will be written by none other than Rian Johnson, with Johnson in the director’s chair for the next installment. I’d actually hoped against hope recently that he could be in play for one of them, so for both (even if Episode VIII is the one that’s really his)…awesome. To quote The Lego Movie ladies and gentlemen, Everything is Awesome. I’m now more excited for these flicks than the one we’ve got coming to us. You can see more below, but again…wow. I’m impressed that Johnson was willing to take the job. Blockbuster filmmaking is better for it, that’s for sure.

Here’s the story from The Wrap:

Rian Johnson will write and direct the eighth “Star Wars” movie, inheriting the franchise from J.J. Abrams, according to two individuals with knowledge of the director’s plans. Johnson will also write the treatment for the ninth movie, but he will not direct it.

Deadline Hollywood first reported that Johnson would write and direct the ninth movie, but both sources insist Johnson will only write the treatment.

Johnson wrote and directed “Looper,” a hit science fiction movie starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as well as “Brick,” an low-budget high school drama that felt like modern film noir.

Several studios covet Johnson given his facility with story, the quality of his work and his ability to handle special effects.

More to come…
