Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’ Piques Interest with CinemaCon Footage

Rian Johnson and Lionsgate brought some exclusive footage with them to CinemaCon attendees Thursday evening. They presented the trailer for the Johnson-directed upcoming suspenseful drama “Knives Out.”

Johnson, who helmed “Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi,” returns to a simmered drama as he takes a break from the intergalactic franchise. Johnson writes this script as well as produces.

As detailed by The Hollywood Reporter‘s coverage:

“I’ve been a die-hard Agatha Christie fan since I was a teenager,” Johnson said during Lionsgate’s presentation. “Knives Out was my attempt to take everything I love about an Agatha Christie who-done-it, jam it into an all-star cast, give it a Hitchcock thriller, genre twist and set it in modern-day America.”

The trailer begins with two detectives (Craig and Stanfield) in a mansion following the death of their elderly patriarch (Christopher Plummer). The detectives ask the family to stay until the investigation has concluded — and they aren’t happy. There’s plenty of bickering amongst the family, including a moment where Evans’ character points at each of his yelling family members and responds, “Eat shit. Eat Shit,” to each one — just to give a taste of the instra-family drama.

Quite the first look. Jamie Lee Curtis has revealed in past tweets jokingly calling Chris Evans her son and we now know why. Evans will be playing her son, while Don Johnson plays her husband in this abstract family. Details on the plot had been kept quietly under wraps until Thursday. What’s been revealed will suffice, given the robust caliber of a cast Johnson has.

The ensemble of cast members include Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Lakeith Stanfield, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Christopher Plummer and Katherine Langford.

Joining as producers include Ram Bergman, Leopold Hughes, Nikos Karamigios and Tom Karnowski. Johnson is returning to the Star Wars universe with an untitled trilogy he will be writing. His previous directorial credits include “Looper,” “The Brothers Bloom,” “Brick” and three episodes of the AMC hit show “Breaking Bad.”

“Knives Out” comes to theaters Nov. 27, from Lionsgate. It is produced by FilmNation Entertainment, Media Rights Capital and Ram Bergman Productions.
