Ridley Scott in Talks to Direct Disney’s Upcoming ‘Merlin Saga’ Trilogy

“All The Money In The World” director Ridley Scott might have found his next project. According to Variety, Scott and his production banner Scott Free are currently in negotiations with Disney to direct “The Merlin Saga,” a trilogy based off the T.A. Barron book series. Gil Netter (“Life of Pi”) would produce alongside Scott and his production company, with Oscar-winning screenwriter Philippa Boyens (“Lord of the Rings”) wrote the script, according to THRTendo Nagenda and Foster Driver are overseeing for Disney.  While neither Disney nor Scott reps could be reached for a comment on the news, Variety’s sources believes the project will be Scott’s next work.

While stories about King Arthur have been abundant in Hollywood, Merlin, the mystical wizard from King Arthur’s court, is rarely treated as the lead, with only BBC’s “Merlin” airing a Merlin-centric story during this century. Disney has historically preferred the tale of King Arthur’s rise to glory, creating the animated feature “The Sword in the Stone” in the early 1960’s. According to Variety, a live-action reboot of the beloved film is also in the works, with Scott and Disney execs also discussing the reboot during negotiations.

Rumors about a solo “Merlin” film began last year, after the character was noticeably absent from Guy Ritchie’s “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.” According to Empire, the original plan was to give Merlin a spin-off film based upon Ritchie’s flick, but that’s now unlikely. Instead, Disney is looking to adapt T.A. Barron’s series of children’s books, which follows a young Merlin before his beef with Morgan le Fay and the creation of the Knights of the Round Table. The story would be a good project for Scott, as the fantastical land of Avalon features amazing imaginary creatures, enough sword fights for some decent battle sequences and an epic story. Here’s hoping Scott does decide to travel to Avalon for his next project.

Scott is repped by WME. His most recent film, “All The Money In The World,” is in theaters now.
