Ruth Negga to Star in ‘Ad Astra’ with Brad Pitt

“Ad Astra’s” Brad Pitt has found his costar, according to THR. Ruth Negga (“Loving”) has just boarded the sci-fi epic, which follows a man’s trip across the dangerous solar system to find his MIA father, a rebel scientist who could end the human race. Tommy Lee Jones (“No Country for Old Men”) will also star in the sci-fi drama; neither his nor Negga’s roles in the upcoming film haven’t been publicized.
James Gray (“Two Lovers”) is set to direct the film, which he cowrote with Ethan Gross (“Fringe”). “Ad Astra” will be produced, financed, and distributed in a collaboration with New Regency, 20th Century Fox and Bona Film Group. Pitt, Dede Gardner (“12 Years a Slave”) and Jeremy Kleiner (“Moonlight”) will produce via their production group Plan B, among others. The film is just the latest project from the collab, which gave audiences “The Big Short,” “12 Years a Slave,” and “Wrong Answer.”
Negga is best known for her role in “Loving,” for which she snagged Golden Globe and Oscar noms. The film was a dramatic retelling of Richard and Mildred Loving’s fight for their love to be legal. The pair were the plaintiffs in “Loving v. Virginia,” which made its way to the Supreme Court and legalized interracial marriage in the US. The actor also appeared in previous Pitt-helmed “World War Z,” and played Raina for three seasons on ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” She currently stars in AMC’s “Preacher,” which premiered its second season back in June.
No word yet on when “Ad Astra” will come to theaters.
