Ryan Coogler’s ‘Creed’ Submits 2 Original Songs for Oscars! Donald Glover and Tessa Thompson Among Writers

Warner Bros. has added two more films to its awards season roster: Ryan Coogler’s “Creed” and Ron Howard’s “In the Heart of the Sea,” both due out later this year.  In the case of the former, we have learned that “Creed” will have two Original Songs in contention that will present an opportunity for the talented Tessa Thompson to gain Academy recognition after being passed over last year for “Dear White People.”  She won’t be the only one with credits on the songs.  Donald Glover, who had a supporting role in Ridley Scott’s “The Martian” earlier this month, is also credited with a song as is writer/director Ryan Coogler.

The two songs titled “Waiting for my Moment” (written by Ludwig Goransson, Ryan Coogler, Vince Staples, and Donald Glover) and “Grip” (written by Goransson, Sam Dew, and Tessa Thompson) both have the staple of the film’s composer in tow but could find some traction ahead of a what looks like a very competitive Original Song race this year.

Glover, who gained fame as one-part of the large ensemble comedy “Community” on NBC, has released music under his alias “Childish Gambino” before including last year’s “Sweatpants.”  The film will also have Thompson in consideration for Supporting Actress alongside veteran co-star Phylicia Rashad.  As expected, the film’s star Michael B. Jordan will make a play in the Best Actor category with Sylvester Stallone listed solely in Supporting Actor.

Neither song is available to listen yet but we will bring it to you as soon as it becomes available.

In the case of “In the Heart of the Sea,” no big surprises listed except for six Supporting Actor hopefuls that include (in order): Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Jordi Molla, Ben Whishaw, and Brendan Gleeson.  Could Walker be dark horse spoiler for the season or is it a matter of coincidence?

“In the Heart of the Sea” will have its first Academy screening on Monday, November 16 in Los Angeles and New York while “Creed” will have its first Academy screening on Tuesday, November 17 in Los Angeles.

“Creed” opens in theaters on November 25 while “In the Heart of the Sea” opens on December 11.
