The San Diego Film Critics Society (SDFCS) have announced their 2019 winners.

“The Irishman” won Best Picture within the critic group. Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie took the Best Director win for “Uncut Gems,” with Noah Baumbach in as the runner-up. The lead acting category wins were awarded to Lupita Nyong’o for “Us” and a tie win for both Adam Driver and Joaquin Phoenix.

Veteran Chinese actress Zhao Shuzhen took the win for Best Supporting Actress for “The Farewell” (#NominateNaiNai), while Laura Dern came in as the runner-up spot for her role in Naoh Baumbach’s “Marriage Story.” In the Best Supporting Actor realm, the SDFCS concluded the category with a tie between Joe Pesci for “The Irishman” and Brad Pitt for “Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood.”

Some underdog features came out on top at the San Diego Film Critics Society awards. Julius Onah’s Sundance premiering drama “Luce” beat out Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Jérémy Clapin’s animated Netflix feature “I Lost My Body” won the award for Best Animated Film, with Disney’s “Toy Story 4” falling just short in the runner-up spot.

The SDFCS recognized Wesley Snipes as their winner in the Best Comedic Performance category for “Dolemite Is My Name,” where the runner-up was revealed to be Taika Waititi for “Jojo Rabbit.” Florence Pugh was awarded with Breakthrough Artist award for her performances in the features “Little Women” and “Midsommar.”
