‘It’ Sequel Will Scream Into Theaters September 2019

Pennywise the Dancing Clown will creep back into theaters sooner than expected. New Line and Warner Bros. have just announced that the horrifying sequel to the rebooted It will premiere Sept. 6, 2019, according to THR. Fans will be getting “Chapter 2” of the two-part story, originally conceived by Stephen King in his novel of the same name.

The news of a sequel is all but expected after “It” broke box office records this month. The scary movie quickly became the top-grossing horror flick of all time, if you don’t adjust for inflation. 1973’s “The Exorcist,” which made $233 million domestically and $441.3 million worldwide, technically still holds the title if the domestic earnings are adjusted to modern inflation. “The Exorcist” would’ve made $917.5 million in today’s money, while “It” has racked up $266.1 million domestically and $478.1 million worldwide. Still, “It” blew audiences away in an otherwise disappointing summer.

Gary Dauberman (“Annabelle”), who penned “It,” has already inked a deal to write the sequel. Director Andy Muschietti (“Mama”) is set to direct the sequel, and producers Barbara Muschietti, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg are also expected to stay on.

“It” follows a group of friends who set out to defeat their hometown’s demon clown Pennywise, first as children and again as adults. While the book hops back and forth across time, the film dissected the story into a kid’s only party; however, word has it that the sequel will emulate the book’s flashbacks, so we’ll be seeing the kids again. Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”), Jaeden Lieberher (“St. Vincent”), Jeremy Ray Taylor (“Ant-Man”), Sophia Lillis (“37”), Chosen Jacobs (“Hawaii Five-0”) and Wyatt Oleff (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) played the band of demon-fighting nerds, and Bill Skarsgård (“Atomic Blonde”) portrayed Pennywise. No word yet on who will be returning to their roles.
