Another actor has joined the secretive “Spider-Man: Homecoming” starring Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.
Variety is reporting that Michael Barbieri, who originally auditioned for the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, is joining the cast in a mystery role referred to simply as “a friend of Peter Parker.”
Details on the film’s plot, as well as character info, has been kept largely under wraps. Michael Keaton and Zendaya recently reportedly joined the film, but the official details of their characters have not been announced either.
Last month it was reported that the “Birdman” and “Spotlight” star was in talks for the Marvel and Sony “Spider-Man” reboot. It was later reported that the negotiations had fallen through. Then, it appeared things were back on, with Deadline reporting that the deal had closed and the renowned actor would be playing one of Spidey’s most infamous villains: The Vulture.
The Vulture was one of Spider-Man’s first real supervillains in the comics, and coincidentally the reason Peter Parker got his famous day job as a freelance photographer (the fictional tabloid The Daily Bugle placed a reward for whoever could capture a photo of The Vulture). Vulture is really Adrian Toomes (although other people eventually take up the mantle), a Staten Island inventor who created a flight harness that provided him with more strength and a longer lifespan. When his business partner embezzled him, he turned to crime for revenge and out of anger.
It is important to note that it is not confirmed that Keaton will play this character, or that the character will even appear in the film. Plot details have been heavily guarded thus far, and speculation is rampant.
However, director Jon Watts seemingly confirmed that Keaton was at least joining the film when he tweeted a GIF of Keaton the same day the casting news broke.
This isn’t Barbieri’s first buzzy film. The young actor also has a role in the upcoming “The Dark Tower” alongside Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.
The film currently has a release date of July 7, 2017.
