Spike Lee has revealed via social media today that his upcoming Vietnam war drama Da 5 Bloods will be released on Netflix globally on June 12, marking the acclaimed filmmaker’s first release since his Academy Award win for “BlacKkKlansman.”

The film stars Chadwick Boseman, as well as previous collaborators with Lee including Paul Walter Hauser, Delroy Lindo, Jean Reno, Jonathan Majors, Jasper Pääakönen, Isiah Whitlock Jr, Clark Peters, Mélanie Thierry, and Norm Lewis.

The following is the synopsis for “Da 5 Bloods” as written by Netflix on their official site:

“Four African American veterans return to Vietnam decades after the war to find their squad leader’s remains — and a stash of buried gold.”

Lee took to Instagram to post a video announcing the release date:

God Thursday Morning. DA New Spike Lee Joint-DA 5 BLOODS Will Be Streaming Out Onto World On Friday,June 12th. Please Check It Out. YA-DIG? SHO-NUFF. Peace And Love. Be Safe.

Lee has also co-written the film along with Kevin Willmott, who he previously collaborated with on “BlacKkKlansman” and “Chi-Raq.”

Lee finally won his first Academy Award two years ago for his “BlacKkKlansman” screenplay, after years of egregious snubs throughout his career. There’s a strong sense of anticipation for this next Lee joint and could certainly be a major contender for the biggest awards of the season.

This also marks the first time Lee has worked alongside Netflix on a project, with the streaming giants set to work with a number of high profile directors this year, including Ron Howard and David Fincher. With current lockdown and social distancing restrictions in place across the globe, audiences have sought comfort in watching Netflix content and there’s no doubt Da 5 Bloods” will attract a large audience thanks to Lee’s prestige.
