“True Detective” has finally found a crimefighting partner for Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”). According to Deadline, Stephen Dorff (“Star”) has boarded the crime series to play Arkansas State Investigator Roland West, the partner of Ali’s state police detective Wayne Hays. The pair will investigate a dark crime that takes place deep in the Ozarks, with a mystery that spans three separate time periods and intimately affects their lives and careers.

Ali and Dorff will play the customary two-man leading team in the upcoming third season, along with Carmen Ejogo (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”). As per usual, showrunner Nic Pizzolato has written all of Season 3’s episodes except Episode 4, which he co-wrote with David Milch (“NYPD Blue”). Pizzolato will also make his directorial debut this season alongside Jeremy Saulnier (“Green Room”). Pizzolato and Saulnier executive-produce the series with Scott Stephens (“Westworld”), Season 1 lead actors Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Woody Harrelson (“Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Season 1 director Cary Joji Fukunaga (“Jane Eyre”), Steve Golin (“The Revenant”), Bard Dorros (“Triple Nine”) and Richard Brown (“44 Inch Chest”).

Dorff is best known for writing and co-directing the 2017 film “Wheeler,” playing an aspiring singer who travels to Nashville to throw his hat in the ring of country music. Dorff also wrote the project’s music and performed all of the music. He most recently featured in Lee Daniel’s TV series “Star” as Brody Dean and played the titular character in 2017’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” prequel, “Leatherface.”

No specifics about a premiere date or info on the number of episodes in Season 3 have been released, according to TVLine.

Dorff is repped by Paradigm and attorney Adam Kaller. Ali and Pizzolatto are repped by WME and Anonymous Content. Ejogo is repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Conway Van Gelder Grant in the UK.
