Lionsgate emerged victorious in a competition to acquire the North American rights to “Blindspotting.” The comedy premiered on Opening Night of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Other distributors in the mix included NEON, CBS Films, and MoviePass.
“Blindspotting” was written by and stars Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal. The pair play best friends and co-workers, Collin and Miles, in the final few days of Collin’s probation. Diggs and Casal also produced the film, which was directed by Carlos López Estrada.
In their statement about the deal, they said:
We could not be more excited. We know from experience that our new partners are not afraid to push boundaries and try something new.
Lionsgate will distribute the film through their Codeblack Films and Summit Entertainment group.
In speaking about the partnership, Casal further stated:
Generally, when people are taking on the monumental task of doing their first film, you go for the things that you have an intricate knowledge of. What we had was this longstanding upbringing in the Bay Area, and a deep relationship with the arts scene there, and with heightened language there and street culture there.
Daveed Diggs was part of the original Broadway cast of “Hamilton.” He won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor for his role as the Marquis de Lafayette. He also works in film and television, guest starring on “Black-ish” and “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” He also appeared in “Wonder” late in 2017.
Rafael Casal makes his feature film debut in “Blindspotting” onscreen. He has worked in a number of jobs on films and television, including cinematography, editing, and directing.
The announcement did not include a release date, but the film is expected later in 2018.
