Survivor: Blood Vs. Water – ‘Rustle Feathers’

Surv27

At the end of last week’s episode, “Gloves Come Off” (you can find the full recap here), Caleb and Hayden’s plan to vote out Tyson failed to come to fruition, and as a result, Caleb was sent to join Tina and Laura M. at Redemption Island. We picked up this week with Hayden announcing to the remaining players that Tyson was going to get his vote in the end, in what seemed to be an attempt to stir the pot a little. Tyson, somewhat pleased and yet a little unnerved to hear this news, drew his alliance of Ciera, Gervase, and Monica together with the idea to vote out Hayden next, with Katie as the backup plan in case Hayden won Immunity.

We were left with these remaining contestants:

Gervase Peterson
Tyson Apostol
Ciera Eastin
Hayden Moss
Monica Culpepper
Katie Collins

Redemption Island:

Caleb Bankston
Tina Wesson
Laura Morrett

The Jury:

Aras Baskauskas
Vytas Baskauskas

Laura M. continued to show her dominance in challenges, winning yet another Redemption Island battle. Tina and Caleb went head-to-Calebhead in a pretty terrific duel, with Tina edging him out on a time limit technicality. Caleb was sent to join the Baskauskas brothers, becoming the third member of the jury. Laura M. gave the hidden Immunity Idol clue to her daughter Ciera, who this time decided to hold on to it. I have to say it was nice to see Tina stick around this episode following this week’s tragic news of the death of her 25 year-old son who was killed in a car accident. It goes without saying that our hearts go out to her and Katie and the rest of their family.

Back at camp, Ciera decided to share the clue with her alliance. Hayden, however, was hovering around and began to search where the others were looking, making everyone a bit nervous. After playing the Idol last week, Tyson searched diligently for the new one, and as a result found the Idol for the second time, securing it nicely in the crotch of his shorts. Hayden’s next move was to try and pull in Gervase to join him and Katie, and then go after Ciera in order to vote out Tyson. Gervase seemed to humor him, but would he really turn on his main alliance?

The Immunity Challenge mixed balance and agility in the first stages, with strength and precision in the second. Monica was far out in front after the first portion of the challenge, working toward her fourth Individual Immunity victory. But Gervase quickly caught and passed her in the latter portion, winning the Immunity necklace for himself. Jeff Probst then asked Gervase to choose two people to take with him to an ice cream reward challenge, and Monica and Tyson were selected, leaving Ciera behind with Hayden and Katie to feel like she was the odd woman out of their four-man alliance.

Hayden wasted no time working on Ciera, assuring her that Gervase was on board with voting out Tyson if she were to flip as well. His major selling point was that they would all lose to Tyson in the end, which they will. You have to give players like Hayden credit. You never give up in this game no matter how desperate the odds seem. I am surprised to hear myself say it, but after Vytas – and maybe Tyson – I think Hayden has been my favorite player this season. He really changed the opinion I had of him from the onset.

At Tribal Council, the shit hit the proverbial fan. After Gervase made it clear he would not leave his alliance, Hayden continued to try and sway Ciera to join him and Katie. and split the remaining six in half, leaving it to a drawing of rocks to determine who would be sent home. Ciera, clearly realizing she was number four in her alliance, decided to flip at the last minute, as her, Hayden, and Katie voted for Monica, while Monica, Tyson, and Gervase voted for Hayden, splitting the vote right down the middle. Monica and Hayden were then removed from the second round of voting, while the other four cast their votes again. Once more, we were left with a 2-2 split for Hayden and Monica, leaving the six to draw rocks from a bag – only the second time in 27 seasons it has come down to this. Five black rocks, one white rock. And while I firmly believe it was the right thing for Ciera to do, in the end, Katie drew the white rock, sending her to join her mother and Laura M. at Redemption Island, leaving Ciera in a rather precarious situation.

Whew! What a Tribal!

Next week, Tina will be faced with the possibility of knocking out her own daughter in the Redemption Island Challenge. Meanwhile, Ciera begins to scramble, trying to get Monica to swing to her and Hayden’s side of the vote. Spoiler: not gonna happen. This game is now firmly Tyson’s. Good night.
