Telluride: First Reactions Praise Adam Sandler in The Otherwise Unruly ‘Uncut Gems’

Uncut Gems

Friday evening saw the World Premiere of “Uncut Gems” from Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie at the Telluride Film Festival. The movie hoped to launch Adam Sandler and the Safdie Brothers into the Oscar race.

“Uncut Gems” stars Sandler and is co-directed by the Safdie Brothers, who also penned the script with Ronald Bronstein. The plot, according to IMDb, is as follows:

Set in the diamond district of New York City, Howard Ratner, a jewelry store owner and dealer to the rich and famous, must find a way to pay his debts when his merchandise is taken from one of his top sellers and girlfriend.
In addition to Sandler, the cast includes the eclectic mix of Eric Bogosian, Julia Fox, Kevin Garnett, Judd Hirsch, Idina Menzel, LaKeith Stanfield, and The Weeknd. Darius Khondji is behind the camera handling the cinematography, while the score is by Daniel Lopatin. All involved would be seeking their first nominations by the Academy Awards.
With the first screening at Telluride now completed, here are some of the initial reactions. Sandler has gotten nice praise, but the film itself is proving divisive, at best.

J Don Birnam had this to say:

Rodrigo Perez chimed in with this kinetic take:

Scott Feinberg was entertained:

Eric Kohn is one of the bigger fans of the movie out there:

Chris Willman loved it too:

Leah Greenblatt praised Sandler:

K Austin Collins was not a fan:

Matt Neglia is a fan of Sandler’s performance but not the film itself:

Miriam Bale had a different take:

“Uncut Gems” is distributed by A24 and will be in theaters December 13.

When he’s not obsessing over new Oscar predictions on a weekly basis, Joey is seeing between 300 and 350 movies a year. He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
