You’d be hard-pressed to find a more unlucky film than Josh Boone‘s “The New Mutants.” It’s hard to believe the first trailer for 20th Century Fox‘s new X-Men adventure dropped in October of 2017 and still hasn’t seen the light of day. Boone’s dark take on the X-Men was initially slated for April 13, 2020, before a troubled post-production pushed the film back a year. The delays only continued from there. Rumors began to circulate about Josh Boone, clashing with the studio over his vision, a possible reboot, and more. These rumors led many to believe Disney would simply dump the plagued project on Hulu or Disney+ to recoup some of the profits. However, there was no such announcement as Disney decided to slot “New Mutants” for an April 3, 2020 release. The future was finally starting to look bright when the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic wiped the film off of the release calendar indefinitely. Now, instead of sending it to VOD, Disney announced a new theatrical release date for the project.
According to the official “New Mutants” twitter account, 20th Century Studios will now release “The New Mutants” theatrically on Aug. 28, 2020. The decision indicates that the studio optimistically believes theaters will reopen by that time. However, with pivotal entertainment hubs such as Los Angeles extending stay at home orders through July, one has to wonder if the film will get delayed again. A second wave of COVID-19 is also projected to spread during the late summer/fall, adding to the skepticism.
As states across the country slowly begin to reopen, so will theaters. Even under strict theater-going regulations, studios such as Warner Bros. and Disney are hopeful that audiences will return to the cinema. They’re banking on films such as “Tenet,” “Mulan,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” and now “The New Mutants” to restore the theatrical experience. However, nothing is certain in this COVID-19 world. There’s still a strong chance that all of 2020’s hottest titles will be delayed even further, but for now, “New Mutants” is finally back on the release calendar.
