Joaquin Phoenix will be honored with one of the first two TIFF Tribute Actor Awards. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the news Friday morning. This comes not long after TIFF announced Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep as the other recipient for the award.

Phoenix stars in Todd Phillips“Joker,” set to have its North American premiere at the festival. Phillips’ film is set apart from the existing DC cinematic universe and sees Phoenix as the troubled and wicked comic book villain. Phoenix will be presented with the award September 9 at the Fairmont Royal York at TIFF’s inaugural Tribute Gala.

Phoenix is a three-time Oscar nominee, recognized for his supporting role in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator,” and for his leading roles in James Mangold’s “Walk the Line” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master.” Phoenix also starred in Lynne Ramsey’s powerful film, “You Were Never Really Here,” as well as last year’s “The Sisters Brothers” and “Mary Magdalene.”

Phoenix receives the honor at TIFF, where actor and filmmaker Taika Waititi will also be recognized with the TIFF Ebert Director Award. Participant Media will be presented with the TIFF Impact Award. The 44th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 5-15.
