TIFF Adds Another 19 Films to Their Lineup, Including ‘Fall of the American Empire’

Denys Arcand

Fall of the American Empire PosterToronto Film Festival, or TIFF, remains one of the largest film festivals in the world. While we received their first push for Festival supremacy last week, TIFF was not done. Today, they’ve added another 19 films to their expanding lineup of features and documentaries. One of the big additions is “The Fall of the American Empire” from director Denys Arcand. The Canadian director is best known for his 1986 film, “The Decline of the American Empire” and winning the Best Foreign Language Oscar for “The Barbarian Invasions.” Archand states the new feature is not a direct sequel to his 1986 film, but instead a spiritual sequel. TIFF is a good landing place for the film.

Anthropocene” and “The Grizzlies” received Special presentation status as well. The documentary “Anthropocene” comes from director Jennifer Baichwal, best known for Indie Spirit nominee “Manufactured Landscapes.” “The Grizzlies” focuses on an Arctic town that discovers the joys of lacrosse. It is the feature-length directorial debut from Miranda de Pencier, producer of “Anne with an E,” and “Beginners.” This will be Pencier’s first feature at TIFF.
