Tom Hanks to Receive Cecil B. DeMille Award at 2020 Golden Globes

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2020 Golden Globes ceremony. The HFPA announced Tuesday morning that Hanks will be the latest recipient of the award honoring outstanding contributions in the entertainment industry. The news was reported by Deadline Tuesday morning.

“The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is proud to bestow the 2020 Cecil B. deMille Award to Tom Hanks,” said HFPA President Lorenzo Soria. “For more than three decades, he’s captivated audiences with rich and playful characters that we’ve grown to love and admire. As compelling as he is on the silver screen, he’s equally so behind the camera as a writer, producer and director. We’re honored to include Mr. Hanks with such luminaries as Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Martin Scorsese, and Barbra Streisand to name a few.”

The Cecil B. DeMille Award is named after the American filmmaker who was first presented with the inaugural prize at the 9th Golden Globes awards. Recipients of this honor over the years include Walt Disney, James Stewart, Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Denzel Washington and Oprah Winfrey. At this year’s ceremony, the 2019 award recognized Oscar winner Jeff Bridges.

Hank stars in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”

Hanks is a two-time Academy Award winner. His wins came for his leading performances in Jonathan Demme’s “Philadelphia” and in Robert Zemeckis’ “Forrest Gump.” He has been nominated by the academy on three other occasions, for his roles in “Big,” “Cast Away” and “Saving Private Ryan.” Hanks is no stranger to the Golden Globes’ welcoming arms. He has been collectively nominated nine times, winning four of those instances. He is also a recipient of an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.

In Shane Slater’s review for Awards Circuit, he calls it “an endearing tribute to Mister Rogers’ legacy of kindness and empathy.”

Hanks also reprised his iconic role as Woody in Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” which has clear contention for awards love this season. The 2020 Golden Globes ceremony will take place January 5.
