Academy Award nominee Tom Hardy (“The Revenant”) and his production company Hardy Son & Baker are set to collaborate with Heyday Films on the biopic “Shackleton,” as first reported by Variety. Hardy will play the famed explorer Ernest Shackleton in the film that he also produces.

The project is believed to be in very early stages, with Academy Award nominee Peter Straughan (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) set to write the script. Hardy’s production partner Dean Baker spoke to Variety about the upcoming “Shackleton” biopic:

“Tom and I were always fascinated by Shackleton as a leader and his contagious optimism and absolute belief in his team,” Baker told Variety. “At a time where leaders seem to be more about self than society, Shackleton sacrificed his own needs to ensure the wellbeing of his team – thats inspirational,” added Baker.

Hardy Son & Baker recently produced the British miniseries “A Christmas Carol” and the television drama “Taboo” that also starred Hardy in the leading role.

Heyday Films meanwhile, led by David Heyman, are coming off the back of a very successful year for their motion pictures. Both “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” and “Marriage Story” were critically acclaimed and both are competing for Best Picture at the Academy Awards this week.

Studio Canal is set to finance the film, who has collaborated with Heyday Films in the past to produce the two very successful “Paddington” films, which both received nominations for Best British Film at the BAFTAs.

Ernest Shackleton was an Irish polar explorer best known for leading three expeditions to the Antarctic. In 2001, a British miniseries also titled “Shackleton” was released starring Kenneth Branagh in the leading role. Just two episodes long, the series was a critical and awards success, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards and was nominated for Best Mini-Series or TV Movie at the Golden Globes. Branagh was Emmy and BAFTA nominated for the role and it will be interesting to see if Hardy can replicate the same kind of success on the film side.
