Netflix today has released the trailer for the upcoming limited series “Unorthodox,” which is set in Germany and is based on the New York Times bestseller of the same name.
Netflix posted the following synopsis to accompany the trailer on their YouTube channel:
“In pursuit of self-determination, a young woman leaves her ultra orthodox Jewish community in New York City to start a new life in Berlin. But just as she starts to find her own way, the past begins to catch up with her.”
The series has been directed by German filmmaker and actress Maria Schrader, who is best known for her acting roles as Lenora Rauch in both “Deutschland 83” and “Deutschland 86” as well as the upcoming “Deutschland 89.”
It stars young Israeli actress Shira Haas in the leading role of Esther Shapiro, best known for her role in “The Zookeeper’s Wife” as well as having previously featured in the film “Broken Mirrors” for which she was nominated for Best Actress with the Israeli Film Academy. Jeff Wilbusch and Amit Rahav also star in the series based on Deborah Feldman’s book. The series has also been written by Daniel Hendler, Alexa Karolinski, Anna LeVine and Eli Rosen. Levine also produces the series along with Henning Kam.
The four-part series marks a further step into Netflix expanding their library to include even more original international television shows. It’s also a big platform for an actress like Haas to be recognized more globally.
It’s also the latest in a long line of limited series made by Netflix, including the upcoming release of Octavia Spencer’s “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker.” They have had contenders in the Limited Series category at the Emmys two years running, with “When They See Us” and “Godless,” but have failed to win the award so far.
“Unorthodox” will be released on March 26, 2020.
