A couple of weeks ago, Focus Features moved around some of their Fall film schedule. Among the movement was a delayed release of “On the Basis of Sex” a biopic about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The film moved off of a November release date to a Christmas release date, fueling the impression the film could become a box office draw. Today, we get the release of a trailer for the film from Focus Features.
The synopsis of the films is as follows:
“On the Basis of Sex” tells the inspiring and spirited true story that follows young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsberg as she teams with her husband Marty to bring a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturn a century of gender discrimination.”
The film is directed by Mimi Leder. Felicity Jones leads the ensemble as a pre-Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsberg. It also stars Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Kathy Bates, and Sam Waterston. The cast and director look to be on their A-game despite some fairly standard biopic moments. Even so, there is plenty of meat on the bone to be mined for dramatic moments. With a strong cast in tow, this appears to be a contender in a lot of areas should Oscar come calling.
2018 has been a banner year for Ruth Bader Ginsberg on film. The documentary “RBG” reached box office success. The documentary performed exceptionally well critically and commercially on the art house circuit. With so much momentum for Ruth Bader Ginsberg and her story, this film could also impress in theaters.
