Tribeca Film Festival is now the latest festival to issue cancellation amid the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak that is increasing and affecting the entertainment industry. The 19th edition of the festival was set to screen the world premiere of Mary Wharton’s documentary, “Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President.”

Jane Rosenthal, Co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises issued a statement Thursday afternoon concerning the issue:

We founded the Tribeca Film Festival as a way to heal our community after the devastation of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. We were determined to overcome our fear and anxiety by joining together. It is in our DNA to march forward while caring about our community.

We have made the difficult decision to postpone the 19th Tribeca Film Festival (April 15-26) based on the announcement by Gov. Andrew Cuomo that events of 500 people or more are banned due to the spread of the novel coronavirus. We are committed to ensuring the health and safety of the public while also supporting our friends, filmmakers, and storytellers who look to Tribeca as a platform to showcase their work to audiences. We will back to you shortly with our plans.

Tribeca Film Festival is not the first nor last festival to cancel under pandemic safety precautions. Last week, the pivotal launching platform for many filmmakers, South By Southwest Film Festival, cancelled amid the coronavirus outbreak. On Wednesday, news broke that CinemaCon is no longer on the slate to take place in Las Vegas for its March 30-April 2 run. WonderCon announced its postponement Thursday as well, distancing itself from the April 10-12 convention dates. Television’s PaleyFest, which was set to start tomorrow, is postponed. And next month’s TCM classic film festival has also been canceled.

Event organizers issued a statement announcing San Diego Comic-Con is still set to happen, as it’s one of the largest gatherings in film and entertainment culture. San Diego Comic-Con will take place July 23-26. The COVID-19 spread is likely to continue bringing event cancellations and delays to light as many distributors, businesses, major sports leagues and more weigh in on the health concern.

More is to develop on when Tribeca Film Festival will now take place.
