Venice Film Festival: Tom Ford’s ‘Nocturnal Animals’ Explodes at the Festival

With the Venice Film Festival in full swing, “Arrival” and La La Land” have already been lauded by audiences. However, it looks like they have some tough competition. Tom Ford‘s sophomore picture, “Nocturnal Animals” arrived with a bang, and reviews claim its a player across the board. A revenge-thriller in the same vein as the work of David Lynch and Alfred Hitchcock, Focus Features is pleased with the early reception. The film features excellent turns from Jake GyllenhaalAmy Adams, and Michael Shannon, which is almost to be expected. Surprises were in store for the audience as well, with Laura Linney potentially entering the supporting actress race.  Given the strong reviews, I’d expect the film to take the Oscars by storm.

With all the positive buzz, it’s worth checking in on the official predictions for the film. Before it’s premiere, we had it ranked just outside of the Best Picture lineup (at 15). Gyllenhaal made our 5 in Lead Actor, as did Shannon in Supporting Actor. Given how reviews triumph the film as Ford’s success, I believe that he’ll rocket up in Directorwere he ranks 17th. Adapted Screenplay is also in play, where Ford currently ranks 9th. Considering that reviews are extremely high on the blending of the two stories, Editing seems in play too. We have it at 27, so expect that to jump into the top 15 at least.

What do you think? Do the reviews indicate we have a top 5 film at Oscar? Or do you think it’s noir feel will make it inaccessible to the Academy? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
