Viola Davis Returning to DC for James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

Academy Award winner Viola Davis will be returning to reprise her role as Amanda Waller for James Gunn‘s take on DC’s “The Suicide Squad.”

As reported in an exclusive from The Wrap, Davis will be returning to her role as the sharp director of all things bad as she oversees the Suicide Squad and delegates missions. She stars as the same character from David Ayer’s 2016 comic book villain film “Suicide Squad.” Ayer’s film grossed over $746 million worldwide and over $325 million domestically. It starred Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Ezra Miller, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis.

Davis previously told Nerd Report that she is”fascinated by the character,” who serves the DC Universe in a similar capacity as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Waller is described as “a former congressional aide and government agent who is often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former super villains working in return for amnesty.”

Davis won an Oscar for Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in the 2017 film, “Fences.” She is joining the already confirmed roles for Jai Courtney’s returning Captain Boomerang and Idris Elba’s role as the recast Deadshot— a role that was previously occupied by Will Smith in the first film. Davis currently starring in the ABC show “How to Get Away with Murder.”

Gunn just recently served as producer on the upcoming “Brightburn,”dubbed “a horror take on the Superman origins/mythos.” It hits theaters May 24. His most notable projects as director include helming the entirety of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” projects. The third installment is currently in pre-production.

“The Suicide Squad” is slated to hit theaters Aug. 6, 2021. The project is still in its beginning phases with Gunn detailed as writing the script from John Ostrander’s original comic book content. It is being produced by Atlas Entertainment, DC Comics, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros.
