A24 have debuted the first trailer for “Uncut Gems,” directed by Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie. The film stars Adam Sandler as Howard Ratner, a jewelry store owner who works as a dealer for the rich and prestige before scavenging to pay his own debts.
The film world premiered at Telluride Film Festival, where it proved to be divisive among critic first reactions. Sandler’s performance in the film does not go unnoticed. As a comedian who has proven an exceptional balance in drama to comedy, as seen in Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected),” Sandler takes the lead with a spiraling character. He was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Baumbach’s film. Sandler was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk-Love.” If received well, “Uncut Gems” could give Sandler an opportunity for an awards campaign.
The Safdie Brothers dive into “Uncut Gems,” their follow up from 2017’s “Good Time,” with a script they wrote with Ronald Bronstein (“Heaven Knows What”). “Good Time” houses an adrenaline fueled performance from Robert Pattinson. The film world premiered at Cannes Film Festival. “Uncut Gems” marks the directing duo’s sixth big project. Their previous work includes “Heaven Knows What,” “Good Time,” the documentaries “Buttons” and “Lenny Cooke,” and their feature length narrative debut “Daddy Longlegs.”
“Uncut Gems” also stars Eric Bogosian, Julia Fox, Kevin Garnett, Judd Hirsch, Idina Menzel, LaKeith Stanfield and The Weeknd.
“Uncut Gems” is produced by Elara Pictures, Scott Rudin Productions and Sikelia Productions. A24 will be distributing the film, which opens to a limited theatrical release December 13. It expands to wide release December 25.
