A24 continues to build on their solid reputation for shepherding new voices to the screen. In the last few years, breakout hits from Barry Jenkins, Greta Gerwig, and Yorgos Lanthimos have found traction with the Academy. This year, A24 has already released potential contenders in “Hereditary” and “Eighth Grade.” Today, they released the trailer for their most recent film from an actor turned director with “Mid90s” from Jonah Hill.
Jonah Hill broke out as a comedian after 2007’s “Superbad” and other Judd Apatow productions. However, he made a name for himself as an actor after earning a pair of Oscar nominations. His nominations, for “Moneyball” and “Wolf of Wall Street” gave Hill the opportunity to work with serious filmmakers, which clearly rubbed off on him. Now his directorial debut looks to be a fun and interesting film in its own right. “Mid90s” will follow a young boy growing up in Los Angeles. Watch the trailer below.
A24 provided an official synopsis for the film.
“Mid90s” follows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 90s-era LA who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.
The cast will be led by Sunny Suljic, who some may remember from “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” Also on board are Lucas Hedges, Katherine Waterston, and Jerrod Carmichael. Hill writing and directing the film is what drew a lot of attention to the project. Based on the first look, it seems there may be more to watch out for.
